Presently, the shelter’s physical plant cannot meet the growing demands of the community. The current facility was built in 1982 and offers only 31 cat cages and 16 dog kennels. The continued demand has forced the shelter to purchase one trailer to house and care for cats.

The challenge facing the Humane Society is clear...to continue its work and meet demand, moving to a new facility will be necessary. The construction of a new shelter

could do more than simply meet the needs of animals today, but grow with that need and address the community need for education and training. The board determined that there would be a focus on three key outcomes for the shelter:

¨ Increase adoptions

¨ Create a healthier environment for animals

¨ Become a resource and education hub for the community to learn about and connect with animals

The Bartholomew County Humane Society took a local approach to this project. After hard negotiations and exceptionally sound planning including a “Buy a Brick” effort, the board purchased 10 acres on road 200 South near the present shelter site.
